The GOLD GLOVE was first awarded in 1957 by Rawlings. The honor is given to who the company believes is the best defensive player. Rawlings used a combination of of defensive statistics along with visual effect to determine a winner. In 1957, only one award was given to each position. In 1958 it was switched to each position by league.
